Another Sunday morning brought another game of football, but this time, the venue and kick-off time had been changed. With less time for warm-up, it was just another classic day of Sunday League, where something always seems to go wrong.
Young Royals started strong, showing their ability to pick a pass and use their pace up front. However, Newham stood firm and eventually created an opportunity to take the lead. A misplaced pass by James Felton turned into a chance, With Ronnie Wilson beating the keeper to the ball and taking it round but wide and tired a shot but couldn’t get it under the bar, moments after Newham had another chance to take the lead when George Hearson long goal kick found Ronnie Wilson challenging the keeper, he was fouled, leading to a penalty. Unfortunately, Jack Field couldn’t convert from the spot, but he would later make up for it.
Young Royals broke the deadlock 10 minutes in when a shot from one of their players deflected off Obiwanne Ngwu, leaving George Hearson no chance in goal. The game could have gone downhill for Newham, but Hearson rolled back the years with a series of impressive saves, keeping them in the match. Their persistence paid off just before half-time when Jack Field found Ronnie Wilson at the back post, and Wilson tapped in his second goal of the season.
Half Time
Young Royals 1-1 Athletic Newham
The second half began with Athletic Newham coming out strong, and the momentum shifted when a Young Royals player was sin-binned just five minutes in. From that moment, Newham took control. Eight minutes later, after some slick passing, Shiv Tailor fed the ball to Karl Brolly down the left, Brolly took advantage of the space and unleashed a shot that beat the keeper, putting Newham ahead 2-1.
Newham pressed for more, and their efforts paid off from a corner when Ronnie Wilson found the head of Obiwanna Ngwu, who powered the ball into the net – redeeming himself after his earlier own goal.
Despite the rain settling the pace of the game, Young Royals managed to pull one back late on. A long ball bounced off a Newham defender, playing a Royals player through to slot home for 3-2. This energized Royals for a final push, but they couldn’t break down Newham’s defence.
