Get to know rising left back Vladyslav Karuchok as he answers a few quick-fire questions about preparing for the season ahead and what goals he’s set for himself on and off the pitch.
1 – What do you enjoy most about playing as a left back?
I like the combination of defense and attack. As a left-back, I have the opportunity not only to stop the opponent, but also to actively support the team in attack. I especially like to connect with attacks on the flank, make crosses or intensify the game with passes.
2 – How do you balance your defensive responsibilities with pushing forward in attack?
The main thing is balance and reading the game correctly. I always assess the situation.
3 – Would you describe yourself as more of a defensive full-back or an attacking one—and why?
I think I’m more of an attacking player because I often like to join the attack and make attacking passes.
4 – How important is positioning and awareness for a full-back at this level?
Positioning and awareness are the foundation of a high-level fullback. In modern football, a fullback must not only be quick and technical, but also tactically competent.
5 – How do you prepare to face tricky wingers or pacey attackers?
Before each match, I visualize how it will play out. I scroll through the moments in my head where I make tackles, block players, read the game, and so on. Because in football, a lot still depends on psychology.
6 – What’s the key to a strong connection between a left back and their winger?
Always talk to your partner. When there is good communication, you will understand each other at a glance.
7 – Are there any professional full-backs you look up to or try to learn from?
I like Joao Cancelo. He is fast, durable, intelligent with a good pass, shot. He has all the qualities of a top Left Back.
8 – What’s the biggest improvement you’ve made in your game recently?
It’s hard to judge myself. But I think I’ve become stronger physically and mentally.
