Player Chat – Ashman Returns and Signs for Athletic Newham

We sit down with Johnny Ashman, whose talent on the pitch is matched only by his drive off it. From early beginnings to standout performances, Johnny has been making waves — and we’re here to get the inside scoop.

Can you tell us a bit about your football journey and how you ended up at Athletic Newham?

I have been playing non league for a few years now but unfortunately I had a bad injury in 2023 so been out the game a while. Speaking with the manager Jon who I know and trust he seems to be building a project here and that’s something I wanted to be a part of.

Who were your footballing idols growing up, and how have they influenced your playing style?

Growing up I would say Ronaldinho the things he used to do was unbelievable.

What’s been the proudest moment of your football career so far?

Many proud moments for me but scoring in the FA cup in front of a decent crowd is special.

As an attacking midfielder, how do you see your role in the team’s system?

Once fully fit I see myself being an influential player in the final third with goals and assists and a few tricks also.

Do you prefer creating goals or scoring them yourself – and why?

Definitely scoring can’t beat that feeling.

Which position or type of opposition do you enjoy playing against the most?

I like teams that try play out from the back and actually try and play football makes the game for fluid.

How do you mentally prepare for a match – any pre-game rituals or habits?

Get an early night and a good pre match meal and try and relax as much as possible.

What part of your game are you currently working hardest to improve?

After such a long time out it would have to be mentality and technical skill.

How important is chemistry with your strikers and wingers in unlocking defences?

Very important to have an understanding of each others strengths and weaknesses and try and predict each others movements on and off the ball that will make a difference in turning chances into goals.
